This series is the second chapter of Alfraji’s project Books of Passage, charting three generations of migration in his family. The first chapter, entitled The River That Was in the South (2019) was shown at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Ayyam Gallery in Dubai and the Cairo Biennale.

Ayyam Gallery Dubai (Al Quoz) is pleased to announce Driven by Storms (Ali’s Boat), a solo exhibition by one of the most prominent Iraqi artists working in the diaspora today, Sadik Kwaish Alfraji. Much of Alfraji’s oeuvre addresses the vulnerability of human existence and speaks of loss, exile, fragmentation, and displacement. Curated by Nat Muller, the show premiers an exciting new body of work the artist has grouped around the theme of ‘Ali’s Boat,’ based on a drawing his young nephew, Ali, gave him on a family visit to Baghdad in 2009.

From May 19 - July 31, Ayyam Gallery, Dubai (Al Quoz) will present R-Evolution, a group exhibition providing an unprecedented look into the complex relationship of art and politics before and after the various uprisings throughout the Middle East and North Africa.

Ayyam Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition, I Do Not Feel Free, by Iraqi artist Sadik Alfraji from 14 March - 27 April 2013. The second exhibition at the newly inaugurated Ayyam Gallery London, this show marks the first time Alfraji has exhibited in the United Kingdom and will feature new works including paintings, drawings and the video installation Godot to Come Yesterday (2013).

From March 12 until April 26, the Ayyam Art Center will showcase the second edition of The Samawi Collection II, a museum-quality exhibition featuring over sixty works of art from the private collections of Khaled and Hisham Samawi. For its inaugural exhibition in 2011, Selections from the Samawi Collection displayed fifty carefully selected paintings from Arab artists traversing the region and spanning generations providing an opportunity for visitors to view the history and evolution of contemporary Arab art.

On view from October 31 through December 15, this forthcoming exhibition will involve a new installation of recent paintings and videos. Together, these works revolve around a narrative that the artist describes as “Eyes which stare into nothingness, and a hand that dreads the void.” Emphasizing the collective, which he often combines with the personal, Alfraji introduces the exhibition by stating, “Fastened to our places we are, intoxicated by the illusion of motion and ruminating on dreams.”

On June 4, Ayyam Gallery Damascus will proudly present the solo show of Holland-based Iraqi artist Sadik Kwaish Alfraji. Marking his debut exhibition with Ayyam Gallery since first joining its lineup of artists earlier this year, this forthcoming event will feature several new large-scale works.
