Abdul-Karim Majdal Al-Beik
25 Oct - 13 Nov 2008 Abdul-Karim Majdal Al-Beik's creativity reflects a wisdom and sensibility beyond his years. Born and raised on the outskirts of Al-Hasakeh, Al-Beik grew up in a tiny village consisting of seven houses built of mud, brick and straw. He has also walked around the streets of old Damascus, observing and feeling the walls; how they differ from those of his childhood but how they are also vessels of reminiscence. Al-Beik explains: "Every alley is bound to have a 'Saeed loves Samira' kind of graffiti on its walls, a spray-painted arrow to some place, a 'For rent' sign, or the daubs of letters and numbers by the neighborhood's children,". Al-Beik adds: "Walls drink in the history of a place; I am trying to portray the passage of time". Read more -
Black vs Colour
16 Oct - 30 Nov 2008 Ayyam Gallery, Dubai has gathered some of Syria's finest contemporary names from its formidable stable of artists for a group exhibition which will feature a vast variety of media. Some of the artists express themselves in shades of black and white, while others opt for colour. The show is an expression of both and will include paintings and photographs that cover different subjects, styles and techniques, all drawing on colour or monochrome. The six artists on show will be Khaled Takreti, Safwan Dahoul, Nassouh Zaghlouleh, Ammar Al-Beik, Asaad Arabi, and Youssef Abdelke. Contemporary Syria – Damascus & Dubai
9 Jul - 30 Sep 2008 During the summer season and with "Damascus Arab Capital of Culture" that's running through the year 2008, Ayyam Gallery is celebrating this event by highlighting Syrian art and artists under Contemporary Syria collective exhibition. Mohannad Orabi
24 May - 5 Jun 2008 Mohannad Orabi has a distinctive style of painting. A stylized character dominates his canvases, all of which he titles 'Self-Portrait'. Sometimes she turns out to be feminine, sometimes masculine, sometimes child-like... Nevertheless, they are all self-portraits in that they capture a certain state of being. Safwan Dahoul & Nadim Karam
15 Mar - 17 Apr 2008 Dream, a dominating title in all of Safwan Dahoul paintings since 20 years. Every painting he ever created is a dream that never ends. Dahoul's elegant portraits, clean lines and flowing figures echo cubist tendencies, but have a life and originality all of their own. Their dominating earth colors, reason being he wants to carry out his message in a simple way without having to resort to colors to convey emotion. He has a vision that painting the motion of the human body allows him to deliver his message more thoroughly than by using any other means. Ayyam Gallery Dubai Grand Opening
