Tammam Azzam
Syria 10 Nov - 31 Dec 2012 Displaced Syrians feel a deep connection and sadness with the events unfolding in their country. As each day brings word of another friend or family member perishing, they feel silenced and immobile, unable to take any action, to cause any formidable change or provide assistance. 'Syria', Tammam Azzam’s solo exhibition of new digital and installation art on show from 10 November until the 31 December at Ayyam Art Center, is his way of reaching out, of sounding his pain and protest and shedding light on the matter. Exhibited exactly one year from the start of the series and curated by acclaimed Syrian artist Safwan Dahoul, these works extend a political commentary on the upheavals in their homeland that have led to the Syrian Uprising and the subsequent destruction and violence. Khaled Takreti
Silence 5 - 29 Nov 2012 From the 5 to the 29 November, Ayyam Gallery DIFC will present, ‘Silence’ a solo exhibition of Syrian artist Khaled Takreti. Departing from his usual heavily saturated candy coloured canvases, a subdued palette of sepia and grey tones and stark backgrounds render this body of work more engaging as the viewer is able to quietly impose onto the world of these silent characters. In many of the portraits there is an almost palpable loneliness, yet there is no sense of weakness in Takreti’s characters. They stare directly at the viewer, almost challenging him to ponder over the internal thoughts lying behind their detached facades. Read more -

Mohamad Badr
The Power of… 19 Apr - 18 May 2012 From beautifully staged monochrome fashion photography, to playfully encasing the sun’s orb in a street lamp, immortalizing the shadows caressing a wall, and evoking the desolation of a train station, the memory of a scent or a provocative look, Badr’s images consistently conjure the poetic and precisely illustrate lucid moments with sharp eloquence. A veritable visual storyteller and a firsthand witness, Badr turned his lens to chronicle a plethora of scenes as overwhelming as the Shivaratri rituals, and the deafening scenes of emotionless public human cremations. He has documented the daily lives of locals in remote and extraordinary places stretching between Azaz on the Syrian/Turkish borders, and all the way to the Himalayas. Read more -
Othman Moussa
The Throne 19 Mar - 26 Apr 2012 From March 19 to April 26, Ayyam Gallery, Dubai (DIFC) will present Othman Moussa’s first solo exhibition, The Throne. Upholding his superb draughtsmanship and influences of seventeenth-century Dutch realism, Moussa’s new works veer away from traditional still life painting of inanimate objects within Syrian life that quietly and poetically speak to the viewer, to a form of still life that shouts. Beautifully rendered, an oriental carpet covers a heavily draped armchair. It is the objects that occupy this throne, which present a satirical, subdued political commentary. Read more -

Tammam Azzam
Dirty Laundry 19 Dec 2011 - 26 Jan 2012 On December 19 Ayyam Gallery, Dubai (DIFC) will proudly present Dirty Laundry an exhibition featuring recent canvases by Syrian painter Tammam Azzam. Continuing his acclaimed body of work, which utilizes rope, clothespins and other found objects, Azzam remains interested in the visual possibilities of basic components amidst an organic state, where the driving force of their arrangement is solely “the mechanisms of creation.” For Azzam, the benefit of working from such methodology is that it facilitates the creation of an artwork as a “hybrid form,” one that is capable of borrowing and multiplying as it evolves. Focusing on technique and experimentation, each installment of the series varies dramatically. Read more
