New Paintings 9 Oct - 30 Nov 2013 Ayyam Gallery London presents an exhibition of paintings by pioneering Palestinian artist Samia Halaby, who is widely credited with inspiring the new school of abstraction in contemporary Arab art. Parallel to her artistic career, Halaby is an active political campaigner for Palestine, as well as a scholar who has been instrumental to the documentation of Palestinian art, publishing her landmark text Liberation Art of Palestine: Palestinian Painting and Sculpture in the Second Half of the 20th Century in 2002. A pioneering conceptual artist and Lieutenant Colonel in the Saudi army, Gharem has consistently challenged existing modes of artistic practice in the isolated, rapidly changing Saudi cultural landscape. This immersive exhibition draws together the different strands of his practice – photography, video, painting, sculpture and performance – giving audiences the first opportunity to experience the full scope of the artist’s work. 24 Jan 2013 On January 24, 2013, Ayyam Gallery London made its long-awaited London debut, opening to an international crowd of over seven-hundred people eager to witness the gallery’s expansion into Europe. A queue extending along New Bond Street from Ayyam Gallery’s premises at No. 143, was a visible demonstration of the excitement currently surrounding the thriving Middle- Eastern art scene, and of the work of Ayyam co-founders Hisham and Khaled Samawi.
