Franklin University Switzerland, an American liberal arts college, recently recognised Ayyam Gallery founder Khaled Samawi for his contributions to international art as a cultural entrepreneur and philanthropist, particularly in the area of contemporary Syrian art. Samawi was given an honorary Doctorate of Humanities during the university’s 47th Commencement Ceremony on 15 May in Lugano, Switzerland.
When introducing Samawi, Professor Johanna Fasll stressed the important role that Ayyam Gallery has had with co-founders Khaled and Hisham Samawi in protecting and saving the contemporary Syrian art scene in recent years, especially during the ongoing war.
