This particular work was made in 1987 by Sadik Alfraji, for the 17th Ljubljana International Biennial of Graphic Arts. We are pleased to announce that this beautiful etching will be exhibited again at the 35th Ljubljana Biennial.
'This work dates back to the last year of my studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad when I was drafted in the Iraqi army, during the Iran-Iraq war. I mixed the expressiveness of graphics with forms inspired by manuscripts, talismans and the human and animal body. Some of my works were titled ‘Elegy’ because of my great feeling of the death of dreams and the cruelty of the world. It was an adventure, full of passion, enthusiasm and daring, to sneak into the graphics room of the Academy of Arts after school to print this work with the etching press and send it in time for the Ljubljana Biennale.’
